In Jewish mysticism, a Maggid is a heavenly being, often an angel, that reveals mystical secrets to a kabbalist. The Talmud describes a maggid as someone who communicates subtle truths, often through parables.
The Maggid of Mezeritch was a disciple of the “Baal Shem Tov”, the founder of Hasidic Judaism – whose central theme reveals a truth; to live each day with joy. In this piece, Mordechai maserfully presents this theme with the depiction of a Hassidic Jew dancing, with great joy, surrounded by the Hebrew word for truth – “Emmet”. The first letter in Emmet, an Aleph, sits strikingly atop the figure’s head, suggestive of a traditional Hassidic hat called a “shtreimel”.
