One of Mordechai’s most glorious masterpieces on paper, “Jacob’s Wrestling with the Angel” has been among the favorites of art connoisseurs.  This piece depicts the night-long battle as described in the closing verses of Genesis (chapter 23:22-32).

In the story, Jacob wrestles with a mysterious ‘being’ until dawn. He is injured in the struggle, but will not give up until the combatant finally pleads with him at daybreak to let him go.  Understanding that the one he was wrestling was clearly an Angel of God, Jacob says: “I will not let you go until you bless me.” The Angel concedes and blesses him with the name Israel, “because you have struggled with the divine and with men, and you have prevailed.” (Israel, Yisrael in Hebrew, means “he who prevails over the divine.”). At the top right of the print, we see the name in Hebrew, “Yaakov” (Jacob), and at the bottom, “Yisrael” (Israel).

A timeless gift celebrating Jewish art, Israel, empowerment, and all seasons of life.
