In this print entitled “Gates of Heaven“ Mordechai reflects one of the most heightened moments of awe with the phrase “Adonai hu ha-Elohim” (Deuteronomy 4:39) that is recited during the Yom Kippur Neilah service. The phrase translates to “The Lord is God”.
In the service, the phrase is recited seven times during the final seconds of Neilah as the climax of the Day of Atonement approaches. The prayer leader and congregation also recite three biblical sentences to reaffirm their commitment to Judaism’s core theological beliefs.
