“Echad” (Hebrew for ‘One’) has deep significance in Judaism, most notably it is a reference to the “Oneness of God”. In this piece featuring bold and proud colors, the Hebrew letters Alef, Chet and Daled create the word “Echad”, however in true form, Mordechai enjoys adding another layer of mystery leaving us with a question. Why do we see another Hebrew letter – an “Ayin” in black, on top of the blue Alef? Looking closer, we find the clue – by noticing that the letter Daled is also in black. From this we can solve Mordechai’s riddle! In the Jewish declaration of faith “Sh’ma Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad” – (Hear O Israel, the Lord Our God, the Lord is One – Deuteronomy 6:4), the letter Ayin in the word ‘Shema’ (Hear) and the letter Daled in the word ‘Echad’ (One) are both written in the prayer books unusually large. This is because the letter Ayin and Daled spell “Ayd” – meaning ‘witness’ – to teach us that when we recite the Shema we should bear witness to G-d’s Oneness.”
A wonderful housewarming gift or for any occasion.
