The music of a king...
Don't miss the opportunity to add this exquisite painting to your collection.
The harp, or kinnor, that King David played was an ancient Hebrew lyre. The kinnor is part of the yoke lute family and is the first lyre mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. It was played with a plectrum, or pick, but the Book of Samuel says that David also played it with his fingers, using it as a solo instrument. The kinnor is often associated with a type of lyre depicted in Israelite imagery, particularly on Bar Kokhba coins.
David was inspired by the harp’s peaceful and healing sounds and would take it with him wherever he went. He played the harp throughout his life, as a young shepherd, and his lyrics covered a range of human emotions and experiences. The Psalms contain many of David’s works, which are said to contain universal truths that are both ancient and contemporary. David was also tasked with playing the harp to cheer up King Saul when he was feeling melancholy and anxious.
