The Work

On Eagles Wings holds a pivotal place in Mordechai Rosenstein’s final body of work. Begun in 2021, it was the fourth painting in what became the Chazzak Series—and the first to include color. The series had begun entirely in black and white, which Rosenstein came to see as a reflection of a pandemic world with little color, joy or human connection.

As vaccines arrived and the possibility of reconnecting with the world began to feel real, Mordechai noted, “I felt the need for color as we will again be carried ‘On Eagles Wings.’” This title comes from Exodus 19:4 and its enduring image of being carried on eagles’ wings—a powerful expression of protection, freedom and hope.

As the painting continued to evolve, Mordechai added something playfully personal as he worked Eagles green into the composition—a subtle nod to Philadelphia and affection for his hometown team.

The finished work brings together so many threads of Mordechai’s life and art: his Jewish visual language, his roots in abstraction, his extraordinary relationship with color, his belief in resilience and renewal—and a little bit of Philadelphia.

Within the Chazzak Series, On Eagles Wings marks the moment color—and hope—returned.

Philadelphia | History

Philadelphia was more than Mordechai Rosenstein’s home. It was where he and Mati built their life together, where they raised their family, and where Rosenstein spent decades developing a visual language that eventually found its way into synagogues, institutions, homes and collections throughout the world.

Mordechai was also, simply, a Philadelphia sports fan, and he loved the Eagles. When the Eagles returned to the Super Bowl in 2023, Rosenstein painted On Eagles Wings.
